Lexicon by Max Barry My rating: 3 of 5 stars "So, in the moment he was occupied with the horror of his softening leather, she broke the glass against the edge of the table and sliced it across his throat." Unfortunately this book didn't really speak to me on any level. Insert cliche; "I really wanted to like this one," because I was a bit excited to find an Aussie scifi writer BUT this book just barely skimmed the edge of science fiction. I was expecting a deep dive into linguistics and subliminal messaging, the power of suggestion and verbal manipulation but this is instead a magical fantasy with "thriller" elements. There are magic words, that can be used by magicians (called "poets") to control different people-types. Sisters of the Forsaken Stars by Lina Rather My rating: 3 of 5 stars Hmmm, something is up with the writing. Or maybe some thing's up with this reader today. I could practically copy/paste my review of book one here and it would work for book two. I still love the detailed world setting, I still think the characters have been fantastic and I'm even willing to add that the plot was a bit more interesting this time, but it's still not engaging with me. On the other hand there are moments like the opening paragraph, which just draw me in and make me want to keep reading: "SISTER FAUSTINA WATCHED on the screen as the orbital station grew closer. She turned off the propulsion and let the ship drift into the docking bay until the skin found the airlock, connected, and made a seal. Translunar Travelers Lounge: Issue Seven: August 2022 by Aimee Ogden My rating: 2 of 5 stars I read 'Raindrop Doughnuts for Women Raining Inside' by Jana Bianchi. So. I wanted to give this a 1-star but I guess I should reserve that honour for books I truly hate. I didn't hate this story, but I really nothinged it a lot. I got nothing at all out of it. I found it a complete bore. I read it because it came up as our weekly short story in the Science Fiction Book Club on fb, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I'm intrigued by the generally positive response. I'd genuinely like to know what makes this story work for others. I read it twice, just to be sure, but it didn't feel like science fiction and it didn't feel meaningful at all. To me, anyway. View all my reviews
