This review is for 'Test 4 Echo' by Peter Watts.

“I spent most of my life surrounded by things that look like me. I came up here so I wouldn’t have to.”

Research is being carried out on a mechanical arm deep in the oceans of Enceladus and when the arm begins to behave atypically the scientists are under pressure to solve the dilemma and maintain their funding status.

A very thoughtful and thought provoking discussion ensues on the rights and the risks of granting autonomy and self determination to any artificial Intelligences.

This was a short but sweet read. The collection looks great and I intend to read and review it all eventually.

Weird Tales v26n04 October 1935 by Kurtis Krimes My rating: 4 of 5 stars This review is for C.L. Moore's 'The Cold Gray God.' Northwest is on Mars again, again.... again. Which is fine but I really wanted to head back to Venus. Anyway, at least it's not the same old dusty environs, here we start with a snowy setting on "Righa, pole city of Mars." Otherwise, it's a bit of a classic start for a Northwest. He spots a beautiful woman standing out from the crowd and she asks "will you come with me?" Of course, Northwest knows what she means by this, because apparently he could tell that she was no ordinary lady of the streets, but this reader could not parse any deep meaning from the exchange. Review: Linesman

Linesman by S.K. Dunstall My rating: 3 of 5 stars For this review I'd like to invite spoilers into the comments.... if you have an idea about what the fkn "lines" are please enlighten me. Don't fear for spoilers in the review though because I couldn't spoil this story if I tried. I'm trying to write a speedy review because I'm nearly late for work (squeezed this in so I can read something else when I get home).... which reminds me. There's a quote on the cover which claims this is a fast-paced story and I don't think that's entirely true. It dragged for me. I'll admit there were some sudden changes and some events which were dealt with super briefly. For example, there was an execution which took place over the course of a single sentence. The mystical "lines" seem underdeveloped to me. They somehow represent sections of spaceships; line 1 for crew, line 5 or 6 was comms, line 10 the ship itself...

Review: Ghost Spin

Ghost Spin by Chris Moriarty My rating: 0 of 5 stars This will be the first book that I DNF in a very long time. I'm usually pretty strict about it, and I generally wont review a book if I didn't get to "The End." Therefore, this is not a review. I did enjoy books one and two, but I realised while reading this last installment that I hadn't paid enough attention to the details and that by this point I was not at all impressed enough. And this is sincerely not a fault of the books. I'm a little distracted and over-committed at the moment and I do plan to come back and give the whole trilogy a proper run. But with that said, this story wasn't grabbing me enough to push on through. I'm quitting so that I can get back to my reading plan for now. View all my reviews
