"She was the top-notch conversion unit operator in the Solar System and she didn't like the way he was doing things."

Extraordinarily for a 1940's story, Miss Stanley is quite a bit of a badass. She brings the humanity to this story too, which is a little less unexpected, but she doesn't do so by yelping about in hysterics like many other female characters of the time. We meet her protesting the wasteful methods used to perfect a way for humans to establish ourselves on Jupiter!

"No matter how many men may die, you’ll go up a notch or two." - is Mr. Fowler's very unsavoury response. And then it seems like business will persist as usual until a little introspection causes a very sudden twist in the narrative. The ending is not so surprising as the way it is reached. Very creative.

Don't fear for spoilers in the review though because I couldn't spoil this story if I tried. I'm trying to write a speedy review because I'm nearly late for work (squeezed this in so I can read something else when I get home).... which reminds me. There's a quote on the cover which claims this is a fast-paced story and I don't think that's entirely true. It dragged for me. I'll admit there were some sudden changes and some events which were dealt with super briefly. For example, there was an execution which took place over the course of a single sentence. The mystical "lines" seem underdeveloped to me. They somehow represent sections of spaceships; line 1 for crew, line 5 or 6 was comms, line 10 the ship itself...

Weird Tales v26n04 October 1935 by Kurtis Krimes My rating: 4 of 5 stars This review is for C.L. Moore's 'The Cold Gray God.' Northwest is on Mars again, again.... again. Which is fine but I really wanted to head back to Venus. Anyway, at least it's not the same old dusty environs, here we start with a snowy setting on "Righa, pole city of Mars." Otherwise, it's a bit of a classic start for a Northwest. He spots a beautiful woman standing out from the crowd and she asks "will you come with me?" Of course, Northwest knows what she means by this, because apparently he could tell that she was no ordinary lady of the streets, but this reader could not parse any deep meaning from the exchange. Naturally, he follows. Well, at least to half satisfy my Venusian dreams, the lady in question is "Judai of Venus [who] had been the toast of three planets a few years past." Review: Ghost Spin

Ghost Spin by Chris Moriarty My rating: 0 of 5 stars This will be the first book that I DNF in a very long time. I'm usually pretty strict about it, and I generally wont review a book if I didn't get to "The End." Therefore, this is not a review. I did enjoy books one and two, but I realised while reading this last installment that I hadn't paid enough attention to the details and that by this point I was not at all impressed enough. And this is sincerely not a fault of the books. I'm a little distracted and over-committed at the moment and I do plan to come back and give the whole trilogy a proper run.
